Viking Arts

Viking Arts had a distinctly ornamental character. For wood, metals, and bones, a flat ornament was typical. They were knit and kneeling motifs – crosses and spirals, and stylized animal motifs, especially lions, snakes, and birds. These motifs are mainly found in artworks – gold jewelry. These are also found on buckles, decorated guns, wooden carvings and wooden architecture. There were golden clips with fine filigree patterns, decorative pins, combs, and decorated gems. Highly developed was the carving art that used antlers, horns, and bones. Under the influence of Carolinian, English and Byzantine art, figural themes appear at a later stage. Viking Art ends with the baptism of the Scandinavian states.
